Tons of oranges infested with a pest arrived in Yekaterinburg.
Seven tons of oranges from South Africa arrived at a produce distribution center in Yekaterinburg. During an inspection of the consignment, Rosselkhoznadzor inspectors together with specialists from the laboratory of the Yekaterinburg branch of VNIIZh discovered a dead adult of the red orange scale insect — a quarantine pest.
According to the press service of the Ural Interregional Directorate of Rosselkhoznadzor, the find was made on October 22 during an inspection of citrus. Based on the results of the examination, specialists concluded that the produce may be allowed for sale.
The agency clarified that the main means of spread of the red orange scale is through planting material, and infested fruit do not pose a serious threat. Therefore the consignment of oranges that arrived from the Republic of South Africa has been cleared for sale.
