      The sentence for the former head of the Department for Economic Security and Anti-Corruption (UEBiPK) of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Sverdlovsk Region, Andrey Dyakov, was pronounced yesterday, October 30, by the Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg. The ex-police officer pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

      As the court found, Dyakov provided protection to businessmen who were illegally reclaiming VAT from the state budget. In particular, he received 17 million rubles from entrepreneur Vasiliy Petrov, who is a defendant in another criminal fraud case. The founder of the company TTK-Yekaterinburg gave Dyakov another 200 million rubles as a bribe.

      The court found Andrey Dyakov guilty of committing two crimes under Part 6 of Article 290 (receiving a bribe in an especially large amount) and two crimes under Part 3 of Article 285 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of official powers that resulted in serious consequences), and sentenced the defendant to 4 years in a strict-regime penal colony, the joint press service of the courts of the Sverdlovsk Region reports.

      Dyakov was also stripped of the special rank of “police colonel” and of the right to hold positions in state bodies and local self-government for 8 years.

      The sentence has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed by the parties within the time limit established by law.
