A seismologist commented on reports of an earthquake in Sverdlovsk Oblast.
Yesterday information appeared in the media about an earthquake of magnitude 3.6 near the settlement of Levikha, located about 100 kilometers from Yekaterinburg. The report appeared on the website of the Kazakhstan National Data Center.
However, residents of Sverdlovsk Region did not feel any tremors — and, specialists say, the reason is that no earthquake actually occurred. This was reported by Oleg Kusonsky, head of the "Arti" geophysical laboratory-observatory, to the E1.RU portal.
According to the seismologist, the data published on that site often contain significant errors — up to 100–200 kilometers.
"Their information should be treated with caution. We did not record any seismic events in the region. Similar errors have happened before, as the automatic system can misidentify vibrations," Kusonsky explained in a comment to E1.RU.
The expert noted that an earthquake of magnitude 3.6 could not have gone unnoticed — residents would certainly have felt it. However, instruments did not register any anomalies, which means there is no confirmation of reports of tremors in the Urals.
Earlier, an international monitoring system recorded an earthquake in the Irbit district.
