Yekaterinburg authorities refused the Georgian society permission to install a bust of Stalin.
The Toponymy Commission removed from consideration the question of installing a bust of Joseph Stalin in Yekaterinburg. This was reported by City Duma deputy Dmitry Sergin.
The idea of installing a bust of the Generalissimo was brought to the authorities of the Ural capital by public activists — the regional "Georgian Society Sakartvelo (the Georgian self-name used by Georgians — note by Uralweb)", the Stalin Center and the "International Union of Diasporas". They sent the appeal to the city administration.
Among the proposed locations for the bust were the square in front of the ODO (District Officers' House) and Kultury Boulevard (next to the Madrid hotel building) in Uralmash.
The matter was submitted for consideration to the City Duma's Toponymy Commission. The meeting took place on Friday, November 14.
— After heated debates at the Toponymy Commission opinions were split — they were categorical and diametrically opposed. I believe that one thing we absolutely do not need at the moment is confrontation in society. Apparently, now is not the time, Sergin said.
