A minor was killed in a nighttime accident at 59 Parkhomenko Street in Yekaterinburg, the Russian State Traffic Inspectorate for the Sverdlovsk Region reported on Tuesday.
The crash occurred at 2:00 a.m. According to preliminary information, the driver of a Lada Granta, traveling along Parkhomenko Street toward the Khimmash microdistrict, chose an unsafe speed, lost control and struck an obstacle in the form of a power-line pole.
As a result of the tragedy, a 17-year-old passenger of the Granta, a resident of Yekaterinburg, died at the scene before the arrival of an ambulance. The teenager was seated in the front next to the driver and was wearing a seat belt.
The driver was an 18-year-old resident of Yekaterinburg with two months’ driving experience. He had no prior administrative record. The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He was taken by ambulance to City Clinical Hospital No. 36. A sobriety examination will be conducted at the place of hospitalization.
The driver told traffic inspectors that he had been driving to a café. He does not remember how he lost control.
Administrative protocols have been drawn up against the driver under Part 1 of Article 12.6 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (Violation of seat belt use rules) and under Part 3.1 of Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (Driving a vehicle with defects or under conditions prohibiting its operation).
An investigation into the accident is under way.
