Vladimir Putin congratulated the Yeltsin Center on its anniversary.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulations on the 10th anniversary to the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center in Yekaterinburg. Kommersant-Ural reported this citing the Yeltsin Center’s press service.
“Today the Yeltsin Center also received congratulations from the President of the Russian Federation V. V. Putin, who was present at its opening 10 years ago,” the institution’s Telegram channel said.
Despite the center’s own claims, the President’s website kremlin.ru makes no mention of any congratulatory addresses sent to the Yeltsin Center.
Entrance to the B.N. Yeltsin Museum is free today, November 25, its Telegram channel indicated.
The Yeltsin Center was opened on November 25, 2015 under Federal Law No. 68 “On Centers of Historical Heritage of Presidents of the Russian Federation Who Have Ceased to Exercise Their Powers” as a research center for holding scientific and educational conferences, Kommersant-Ural reminds.
For almost its entire existence the Presidential Center in Yekaterinburg has been subjected to criticism from opponents of the policies pursued by Russia’s first president, who see the Yeltsin Center as an embodiment of the spirit of that era and a vehicle for liberal ideas.
The closure of the Yeltsin Center in its current form is demanded by well-known figures such as film director Nikita Mikhalkov. The center’s leadership has been accused of discrediting the Russian armed forces.
Despite the active condemnation, the Yeltsin Center remains a draw both for local residents and for tourists visiting Yekaterinburg. The center itself has recently been actively promoting the slogan that it is now impossible to imagine Yekaterinburg without the Yeltsin Center.
