A surgeon from Sverdlovsk saved the life of her future colleague when he was seven.
A surgeon from Kamensk‑Uralsky with half a century of experience once saved a boy who years later became her colleague.
People come into medicine in different ways: some continue a family tradition, some are inspired by great names like Nikolai Pirogov. And two pediatric doctors at the City Hospital of Kamensk‑Uralsky are united by an unusual story — and a slender surgical thread spanning 36 years. Reported by the Ministry of Health of the Sverdlovsk Region.
Pediatric surgeon Valentina Shekunova has been working at the same hospital for more than 50 years, saving young patients. Over her long career she has helped around 80,000 children, among whom are now grandmothers and grandfathers.
One of those saved was seven‑year‑old Dima. In 1989 he was run over by a ZIL truck and was admitted to the hospital in serious condition — with multiple injuries and fractures. Valentina Vsevolodovna successfully performed the operation.
Years later that same boy grew up and became pediatric surgeon Dmitry Pozdeev. For 19 years now he has been working in the same city hospital under the guidance of his rescuer and now helps the young patients of Kamensk‑Uralsky himself.
