An infection nearly destroyed the spine of a Sverdlovsk ambulance driver.
Neurosurgeons at the Sverdlovsk Regional Hospital for War Veterans performed a complex two-stage spinal operation on a 52-year-old ambulance driver. The patient had worked for many years as a driver, transporting critically ill patients to hospitals in Yekaterinburg, and this year he himself ended up on the operating table.
— The man was experiencing severe pain and weakness. One day he fell, broke his ankle and could move only with the help of crutches. Due to spinal instability and severe pain, it became difficult for the patient not only to work but also to take care of himself at home. Relatives turned to the hospital for war veterans, where they were offered staged surgical treatment, the Sverdlovsk Ministry of Health press service reported.
The man's problems began after a long-ago operation on the lumbar spine. His body began to reject the previously implanted metal construct, a peri-implant infection developed, and the patient's condition deteriorated rapidly. First the neurosurgeons removed the infected construct and debrided the focus of inflammation. The patient then underwent a course of intensive antibacterial therapy and preoperative preparation. Subsequently, a titanium 3D implant manufactured according to his individual anatomical parameters was implanted, and spinal fixation was performed using Russian cancellous screws.
Within the first 24 hours after the second operation all of the patient's pain had completely subsided. The man was able to get to his feet and began walking unaided. He is now undergoing rehabilitation and preparing for discharge.
