The State Traffic Inspectorate warned Sverdlovsk residents about a new cold snap.

The Sverdlovsk Region Traffic Police is calling on drivers to exercise increased caution due to heavy precipitation and falling temperatures. The agency issued the warning today, January 18, on its social media.

“Intense snowfall is being observed across the Sverdlovsk Region, which, together with the significant cold expected during the week, is creating difficult road conditions. Traffic police officers have been placed on enhanced duty,” the Sverdlovsk traffic police reported.

“Drivers are strongly advised to choose a speed appropriate to the specific driving conditions and the state of the roadway that will allow full control of the vehicle. It is extremely important to increase the distance to the vehicle ahead and to refrain from risky overtaking and abrupt maneuvers,” the traffic police urge motorists.

Young drivers (with less than two years’ driving experience) should exercise particular caution.

The traffic police also reminded drivers to give advance attention to the technical condition of their vehicles, namely: the condition of the battery, the ignition system, winter tires, the cooling system and the windshield washer fluid.

It is advisable to postpone non-essential long trips and to have in the car a charged mobile phone, warm clothing and a supply of food.

If an emergency situation occurs on the road, immediately turn on the hazard lights, place the emergency warning triangle, call 112 and remain in the vehicle if it is not possible to reach a populated area safely.

Pedestrians should use reflective elements on their clothing and cross the roadway only at designated places. Parents and legal guardians of minors should step up supervision of children’s whereabouts and ensure that their clothing has reflective elements.
