The doctor from Pirogovka explained when orange juice is truly beneficial
March 20, 2026
Natural freshly squeezed orange juice in an amount of no more than 150-200 ml per day is a valuable component of a diet for a healthy heart and blood vessels. This was reported to the Uralweb.ru portal by Elvira Khachirova, associate professor of the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases No. 2 at Pirogov University, PhD.
Only the juice that you have squeezed yourself and just recently is beneficial, the doctor emphasizes. It is indeed a real cocktail of cardioprotectors - antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins.
Antioxidants such as hesperidin and quercetin (substances from the flavonoid group) are the main focus of cardiologists when it comes to orange juice.
Hesperidin improves the function of the endothelium - the inner lining of the arteries. It promotes the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes and dilates blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and easing the heart's workload. Hesperidin also combats inflammation in the vascular wall - one of the main culprits of atherosclerosis.
Potassium is the "electrolyte balancer." This macroelement is an antagonist of sodium (salt). Adequate potassium intake helps the kidneys eliminate excess sodium, which contributes to a reduction in blood volume and, consequently, normalizes blood pressure.
Vitamin C is the "antioxidant shield." In addition to strengthening the immune system, vitamin C protects "bad" cholesterol (LDL) particles from oxidation. It is the oxidized LDL that is actively captured by the cells of the blood vessels, forming atherosclerotic plaques.
Finally, some components of the juice reduce the blood's tendency to form clots, lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke.
"However, the gold standard for heart health has always been and remains the whole fruit. By eating an orange, you get all the same beneficial substances plus vital fiber, which softens the glycemic response and serves as food for the beneficial gut microbiota," says Elvira Azretalievna. "Therefore, my advice is to prefer whole oranges, and consider freshly squeezed juice as a pleasant and useful addition, not a substitute."
