In Yekaterinburg, they came up with a way to increase the speed of trams that travel at only 13 km/h.
In Yekaterinburg, plans are underway to speed up trams by separating the tracks. In 2025, the average speed of trams in the city was only 13.7 km/h—significantly lower than that of buses, which travel at an average speed of 17.3 km/h.
According to the city's transport department, trams are often delayed due to foreign objects in the cabin, cars stuck on the tracks, and accidents. At the same time, the stoppage of one tram blocks the movement of the entire line, while buses can bypass obstacles.
To address the issue, this year the authorities intend to separate about 50 kilometers of tram tracks. On 14 sections, they will be separated by curbs and delineators.
The work will take place, in particular, on the streets of March 8, Lunacharsky, Radishchev, Belorechenskaya, Malyshev, and Lenin Avenue.
In addition, the authorities plan to speed up other public transport as well. In 2026-2027, the city plans to introduce about 20 more kilometers of dedicated lanes for buses and trolleybuses.
