On March 26, 2026, the Chelyabinsk Regional Court announced the verdict in the criminal case regarding the mysterious disappearance of journalist Vladimir Kirsanov from Kurgan 25 years ago, reports the 74.RU portal.
Editor-in-chief and columnist of the newspaper "Kurgan Vesti," Vladimir Kirsanov, went missing on May 17, 2001, while on his way to work. He did not contact his relatives again, and his body was also not found. In March 2023, investigators from the Investigative Committee of Russia announced the breakthrough in the case due to new opportunities for forensic experts. In 2021, biological traces of the criminals were found on the seat covers of the journalist's car.
According to the investigation, four members of the Kurgan organized crime group ambushed Kirsanov near a garage and struck him multiple times with a metal baton. They then searched the premises and stole documents related to the victim's professional activities. Shortly before his disappearance, the journalist told his wife that he was being followed, writes "Lenta.ru."
The criminals drove Kirsanov's personal car to the editorial building to confuse the operatives. During the investigation, it was revealed that two members of the organized crime group involved in the attack on Kirsanov disappeared themselves ten years later. Another suspect, athlete and businessman Ivan Kurpishev, was acquitted.
He was released from custody after a jury's acquittal, and he attended the sentencing hearing on his own, writes 74.RU. Kurpishev has been recognized as having the right to rehabilitation for his unlawful criminal prosecution.
Based on the jury's verdict, the guilty verdict was announced today for the fourth participant in the crime—former lawyer Alexander Shtinger. He was charged with murder and fraud. He received an 11-year sentence in a strict regime colony. Shtinger must also pay five million rubles to the journalist's widow as compensation for moral damages.
