"Optimal for our climate." Ural scientists have created a plum variety "Shelest."
The patent for the breeding achievement "Chinese Plum Variety 'Shelest'" was obtained this year by scientists from the Sverdlovsk Breeding Station of Horticulture (UrFANIC UrO RAS), as reported by the press service of the latter.
The author of the variety is the stone fruit crop breeder in the Urals, researcher Margarita Germanovna Isakova. The development surpasses in taste and quality the varieties created in the 1990s.
The "Shelest" variety is specifically designed for the conditions of risky farming in the Middle Urals based on the hardiest species - the Ussuri plum.
The variety demonstrates stable yields during the full fruit-bearing period: from one mature tree, one can harvest from 20 to 40 kg of fruit. The fruits are oval-shaped, with a burgundy skin and a slight waxy coating. The flesh is yellow, juicy with medium density. The tasting score of the fruits is high - 4.8 out of 5.
The variety is early-bearing and enters fruiting in the 3rd to 4th year after planting. Ripening occurs in the first decade of August - an optimal time for the Urals.
Like other plum varieties, "Shelest" is self-sterile, so to obtain a bountiful harvest, gardeners will need to plant pollinator varieties nearby with a similar average flowering time.
"Shelest" is promising not only for the Ural region but also for the harsher climate of Siberia, as well as the northern part of European Russia.
As of today, mother plants for the propagation of the new variety have already been established at the Sverdlovsk Breeding Station of Horticulture.
