Ural scientists have discovered super-properties of ordinary kefir.
Scientists from Ural Federal University have found that kefir may help lower blood pressure and have an anti-diabetic effect. The study on the beneficial properties of the popular fermented milk drink was published in the journal Food Production, Processing and Nutrition.
Experiments showed that kefir can reduce the risk of hypertension due to special peptides—substances that help dilate blood vessels and reduce the load on the heart. In addition, the drink positively affects the functioning of the nervous system, which regulates heart rhythm and pressure.
Another important property is its help in controlling blood sugar levels. According to researchers, the beneficial bacteria in kefir improve insulin sensitivity, help the body process glucose better, and may lower the level of the "sweet" protein HbA1c, which indicates the average sugar level over several months.
Experts note that a particularly noticeable effect was observed in experiments on animals and in people with type 2 diabetes. However, scientists emphasize that kefir does not replace treatment but can only be a useful supplement to it.
At the same time, there is no universal consumption norm yet—the benefits depend on the composition of the drink, the type of milk, and the starter culture. Therefore, the best recommendation remains regular but moderate consumption of kefir.
