Drivers from across the country will dive into the Ural quarry to a "depth" of a 14-story building without scuba gear.
The All-Russian freediving competition will take place in July near Nizhny Tagil. The location for participants to dive without the use of oxygen equipment, relying on breath-holding, will be the Lazurny quarry, reports v-tagile.ru.
The Lazurny quarry is considered a unique location due to the high transparency of the water: in good weather, visibility reaches 30-40 meters. The maximum depth of this technogenic water body is 65 meters. This allows for the highest level competitions to be held, reports v-tagile.ru.
The feature of freediving is that a person relies solely on the volume of their own lungs.
Having descended to the declared depth, the athlete must retrieve a confirming flag. Among the submitted applications, there is already one for a dive at 55 meters.
It is expected that from July 10 to 12, more than 150 athletes from all over the country will arrive in Nizhny Tagil, including Russia's record holder Alexander Maximov, who can hold his breath for more than nine minutes.
Winners will be determined based on the total points in three depth diving disciplines among men and women.
