Half of the ticks in the Sverdlovsk region are carriers of a dangerous disease.
Since the beginning of the tick activity season in the Sverdlovsk region, 15,000 cases of tick bites have been registered. This was reported by the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor.
According to the agency, there are 72 patients in the region's hospitals suspected of having tick-borne encephalitis. Another 128 people are under medical observation with suspected tick-borne borreliosis, also known as Lyme disease.
Laboratory studies have shown a high infection rate of ticks with various pathogens. Specialists examined 12,400 specimens, of which nearly half—48%—were found to be carriers of borreliosis pathogens. The tick-borne encephalitis virus was detected in 1.4% of the tested samples.
Ticks were also found to be carriers of other dangerous diseases: the pathogens of monocytic ehrlichiosis were identified in 3.4% of cases, and those of granulocytic anaplasmosis in 1.1% of samples.
Specialists remind residents of the region about the necessity to observe safety measures when visiting forests, parks, and summer cottages, as well as to seek medical help in a timely manner if a tick bite is discovered.
