All 5 retired shepherd dogs from the UFSIN in Yekaterinburg have found new owners.

      On June 25, 2026, all five service dogs-retirees from the IK-10 colony in Yekaterinburg found new homes and owners - the dog handlers handed them over to reliable new owners, the press service of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Sverdlovsk region reported on Thursday.

      According to a representative of the regional Federal Penitentiary Service's canine unit, 20 service dogs retired in 2025, and in 2026, there were already 23. About half of them are taken home by the staff of the institutions who have worked with them all these years. Often, they have several furry friends living with them. However, there are still some that remain on state support at the colony. According to specialists, it is better for such animals to be in a home environment.

      To address this, the IK-10 dog handlers appealed to citizens through the media, seeking those who would like to adopt a trained, well-behaved dog. After the publication, dog handler Ekaterina received hundreds of calls.

      By Sunday, overcoming a 6-hour journey from Kurgan to Yekaterinburg, the new owner Veronika Igorevna picked up Torres. She knew that the dog limped and had health issues, but Torres still captured her heart, so he was taken simply for love.

      On Monday, June 22, three more German Shepherds left with new owners to Bolshoy Istok, Novoutkinsk, and Severouralsk.

      Andrei, who lives in the village of Novoutkinsk, adopted a dog named Rav. They previously had a dog, but it passed away due to old age. Therefore, they decided to take Rav. They liked him immediately. Bura was handed over to Severouralsk. The owner's name is Sergey. He and his wife love animals, so they decided to take Bura into their home. Madlen left that same evening for the village of Bolshoy Istok. She was picked up by Alexander Nikolaevich along with his wife; they currently have another dog, a boy named Amur. They decided to get him a more active companion, believing it would be more fun for them together. Yesterday, the dogs already met.

      The last to find a new home was the shepherd Elba. Today, June 25, Elba left with her new owner to Asbest. This dog has a very complex character - she was watched and feared. Today, Natalia arrived. They spent three hours finding common ground - and they found it.

      In total, there are about 340 service dogs serving in the Sverdlovsk Federal Penitentiary Service, performing various tasks - from tracking down fugitives and serving at posts to searching for drugs and explosives. Upon reaching the "maximum" age of service, the dogs retire.

      Currently, there are 10 dogs serving at IK-10 - 7 German Shepherds and 3 Belgian Shepherds. Last Sunday, June 21, the dog handlers of the Russian penitentiary system celebrated their professional holiday.
