Drones will start transporting people in the Sverdlovsk region.
Driverless trams may start operating on routes in the Sverdlovsk region. This is reported by "Kommersant."
The Sverdlovsk region could become one of the first regions in Russia to test driverless trams. The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation has prepared a draft resolution that will allow the experimental legal regime for such transport to be extended to the Middle Urals and the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Currently, the testing of driverless trams is officially permitted only in Moscow and St. Petersburg. According to the draft, during test trips, a test driver will be required to be in the cabin to monitor the system's operation and intervene in management if necessary.
Work on the technology in the Middle Urals has been ongoing for several years. As early as 2025, driverless trams began testing in one of the region's depots. According to Governor Denis Pasler, the artificial intelligence system installed on the tram can already recognize obstacles and automatically stop the train 7-10 meters before the obstruction.
Moscow remains the most advanced region in the development of driverless tram traffic. Currently, four driverless trams are in operation there, and by the end of the year, their number is planned to increase to 15. In the long term, by 2030, city authorities intend to increase the fleet of such trams to 400 units.
Experts note that testing driverless rail transport requires serious software refinement and constant monitoring by specialists.
