In Yekaterinburg, the court sentenced human rights activist Sokolov for hyperlinks to Meta*.
Human rights defender Alexey Sokolov from Yekaterinburg has become the first person in Russia to be charged under the article for repeated demonstration of extremist symbols for publishing hyperlinks to Facebook* in a Telegram channel (*the social network belongs to the American platform Meta, which has been recognized as extremist and is banned in the Russian Federation). This is reported by 66.RU.
According to the investigation, Sokolov published hyperlinks to the Facebook* social network in the Telegram channel "Human Rights Defenders of Ural." The human rights defender claims that he was not the moderator of the channel.
He has also been charged with treason.
According to a source from 66.RU, Sokolov received grants from abroad through journalist Elena Shukaeva from "Radio Liberty"* (*the media outlet is listed by the Russian Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent, and broadcasting in Russia is prohibited). In addition, Sokolov may have received money from France, for which, according to the source from 66.RU, the human rights defender visited pre-trial detention centers and communicated with detainees.
Searches related to the treason case also took place at the homes of Sokolov's colleagues—lawyers Roman Kachanov and Larisa Zakharova. The latter are accused under the article for cooperating with undesirable organizations—the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and the National Endowment for Democracy (both banned in Russia). Kachanov has admitted guilt and provided testimony against accomplices.
On Friday, the Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg sentenced Alexey Sokolov to two years of forced labor under the article for repeated demonstration of extremist symbols. He did not admit guilt.
