In Yekaterinburg, discussions continue about the future improvement of Weiner Street. The organizers of the International Festival of Landscape Art "Atmofest" presented their own concept for greening the city's main pedestrian street and published renderings with an alternative design option.
According to the festival director, Yulia Sorokina, the project envisions the creation of a "green ribbon" with a central walking area. Unlike the existing concept, where trees are planned to be planted in pots, the architects propose to place large trees in open soil.
In Sorokina's opinion, potted plants cannot form a full crown and do not provide sufficient shade. Because of this, she believes the street could turn into a "heat dome" that will heat up significantly in hot weather.
At "Atmofest," it is noted that mature trees help lower air temperature, trap fine dust, reduce the load on stormwater drainage during heavy rains, and make the urban environment more comfortable for pedestrians.
The authors of the concept also propose to complement the greening with meadow flower beds under the trees. In their opinion, this approach will create not only a more attractive public space but also improve the ecological situation on one of the most popular streets in Yekaterinburg.
