An unnamed UAV specialist explained to the EAN agency the reason for this peculiarity.
"From Ukraine, they launch aircraft-type drones An-196 'Lyuty.' According to the Ministry of Defense, UAVs towards the Ural Federal District are usually launched from the Kharkiv region, and from there to the Urals is about 1700 km. 'Lyuty' are relatively slow drones; they need at least 17 hours to reach the Urals from the launch point.
Therefore, they are launched from Kharkiv in the evening so that they cover most of the distance during the dark hours, and by morning they are on site," the EAN interlocutor explained. "If they flew during the daytime, there would be a greater chance that air defense forces would detect and shoot them down, preventing them from flying so far."
