New inhabitants have appeared at the Yekaterinburg Zoo - photo
Two decorated spiny-tailed lizards, Luchik and Glasha, have settled in the Yekaterinburg Zoo. This was reported by the zoo's press service.
These lizards are calm but secretive, making them difficult to find. Some visitors think the enclosure is empty and leave without spotting them.
The length of the spiny-tailed lizards reaches 37 centimeters. Their scales are uniform, without large spiny shields. Small spines are only present on the upper part of the thighs. The tail is slightly flattened. The coloration of males and females differs. Males can be green, blue, or red with dark brown lines forming a net-like pattern. They are adorned with rounded yellow spots, often arranged in rows. The throat, sides of the neck, and bases of the limbs are bright green, while the belly has a black pattern on a light background. Females are duller, with spots on a light brown back, ranging from brick red to yellow. Their belly is whitish.
Decorated spiny-tailed lizards are endemic to the Middle East. They inhabit mountainous and rocky areas of stony deserts with sparse vegetation. They can be found in Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.
Young lizards feed on insects, while adults switch to fruits, leaves, flowers, and seeds of plants.
You can meet the spiny-tailed lizards in the "Southern" pavilion on the first floor.
