France has decided to return its consul general to Yekaterinburg.
The French Consulate General will resume operations in Yekaterinburg in the coming months, Alexander Kharlov, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s representative in Yekaterinburg, said at a press conference at TASS-Ural.
Consul General Pierre-Alain Coffignier left Yekaterinburg in February 2024 upon the completion of his mandate.
“Literally yesterday or the day before a delegation from the French embassy, headed by the ambassador, was in Yekaterinburg, and they discussed, first and foremost, the question of the functioning of the French Consulate General here,” TASS quotes Kharlov as saying.
“...The Consulate General has maintained its presence here, and they were considering the question of its location and the selection of a candidate for the post of Consul General of France in Yekaterinburg — this matter will take several months,” he added.
Kharlov said that Russia is awaiting further steps from the French side.
Kommersant‑Ural notes that the Consulate General has not been processing visa applications since 2012.
Earlier this week, after parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the former head of the cabinet François Bayrou, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, appointed a new prime minister. He was Sébastien Lecornu, who had headed the Ministry of Defense in Bayrou’s government.
