The principal of a Sverdlovsk gymnasium explained why a second-grade girl was prohibited from wearing a kokoshnik.
The principal of Gymnasium No. 5 in Berezovsky has spoken for the first time about the conflict surrounding a second-grader who came to class wearing a kokoshnik.
Recall that on September 25 a pupil of class 2 "D", Lena (name changed), wore to school a traditional Russian headdress in the form of a headband. The homeroom teacher, Elena Gennadyevna, made a remark to the girl. According to the student's mother, Ekaterina Kirichenko, her daughter came home in tears. The teacher allegedly told her: "Take off the kokoshnik, you're not at a carnival." The woman contacted the teacher via messenger, but in reply again heard that a businesslike dress code must be observed at school.
The girl's mother noted that she herself often wears kokoshniks and does not consider them a festive accessory. A few days later Lena came to school again — this time in a gray headdress. However, on that occasion the teacher again asked her not to wear it.
The story received widespread public attention. Marina Akhmedova, a member of the Presidential Council for Human Rights, supported the family, stressing that the kokoshnik is a traditional Russian headdress. The Berezovsky District Education Department stated that there was no conflict as such, and that the teacher only reminded pupils about the appearance rules. The organization recalled that from July 1, 2025 a new GOST (state standard) is in effect, according to which school uniforms must be neutral and without additional symbols.
The school's principal, Aleksey Dorokhin, clarified that the teacher's remark was made from a safety standpoint. His words were reported by KP-Yekaterinburg.
"Even if the kokoshnik is used like a headband, it has sharp edges and can be dangerous, because children move and play actively," he noted. "According to the teacher, she did not say: 'You're not at a carnival,' but suggested wearing such accessories at a school performance, and using more comfortable hair clips at school."
According to the principal, after the uproar the teacher, Elena Kotsova, has been very upset; her blood pressure rose and an ambulance was called for her. She is now refusing to communicate with the press. A conflict commission including representatives of the Education Department has been set up at the gymnasium.
"If it turns out that there were indeed unacceptable statements, we will take measures. If there were no violations, the teacher has the right to defend her honor and dignity in court," the principal summed up.
