In Yekaterinburg, transport fares were raised by a record amount. Why did this happen?
From November 1, in Yekaterinburg the cost of a single trip on public transport will rise to 42 rubles — an immediate 9-ruble increase, the largest raise in the city's history. Previously a trip cost 33 rubles; that price had held for 2.5 years.
The fare increase is linked to the high cost of operations: fuel, depreciation and employee wages have become more expensive, and the city's expenses for payments under contracts with carriers have also risen (from 1.3 billion rubles in 2019–2023 to 12 billion in 2025). The average salary of tram and trolleybus drivers is now about 123 thousand rubles, and additional training and stipends are being provided to attract new specialists.
In addition, the administration is actively renewing the transport fleet: since 2024, 17 trams and 100 trolleybuses have been purchased, and 150 new buses are planned. These measures are part of the 2024 transport reform aimed at improving the quality of public transport services.
At the same time, the administration cut the price of unlimited passes by 1,000 rubles, allowing an unlimited number of transfers on any type of transport for citizens without benefits or special status. Mayor Alexey Orlov emphasized that public transport remains a social service and is not intended to generate profit.
The portal 66.RU reported the statistics. For example, over the past 15 years the cost of a single trip on Yekaterinburg's public transport rose from 14 rubles (2009) to effectively 42 rubles. Every few years the fare increased by a maximum of 2–4 rubles. The largest increase occurred in 2012, when it rose by 5 rubles at once and became 23 rubles instead of 18.
