A monument to the Russian pilot who repeated Gastello's feat during the Special Military Operation will be unveiled today in the Urals.

At the Preobrazhenskoye Cemetery in Chelyabinsk today, December 2, a monument will be solemnly unveiled to military pilot, Hero of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Antonov, who died during the liberation of the Donetsk People’s Republic, the EAN agency reports, citing the government of the Chelyabinsk Region.

Three years ago to the day, on December 2, 2022, while carrying out a combat mission in the area of Kleshcheyevka in the Artemovsk district of the DPR, the crew of a frontline Su-24M bomber of a PMC, consisting of commander Alexander Antonov and navigator Vladimir Nikishin, repeated the feat of World War II hero Nikolai Gastello by steering their damaged aircraft into a concentration of Ukrainian Armed Forces equipment.

The title Hero of the Russian Federation was posthumously awarded to Alexander Antonov and Vladimir Nikishin by a decree of the President of Russia in December 2022.

During the mission Antonov and Nikishin’s plane was shot down by the enemy with a MANPADS. The crew decided to direct the burning aircraft into a tank column of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Thanks to this, our forward assault groups, which had been threatened by a tank breakthrough by Ukrainian forces, managed to hold their positions, EAN writes.

The crew commander’s last words, “Say hello to Daddy, you bastards!”, have become one of the symbols of the special military operation, military Telegram channels note.
