The person rescued from an ice hole on the Beloyarsk Reservoir died in hospital.
A man whom rescuers had managed to pull out of a hole in the ice on the Beloyarsk Reservoir has died, URA.RU reports. The body of the second person who had been on the snowmobile has not yet been found.
The tragedy occurred on the night of January 4–5 at the Beloyarsk Reservoir. A snowmobile carrying two men broke through the ice. One of them was pulled from the water, but later died in intensive care. Searches for the second man are being carried out by officers of the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations; divers will join them.
The men had been heading out on a snowmobile to go fishing, Sergey Khrushchev, director of the Rescue Center, told URA.RU.
Khrushchev warned that the ice is currently extremely uneven and therefore unpredictable, and that going out onto the water on any kind of vehicle is very dangerous.
The ice on the Beloyarsk Reservoir is affected by a warm current, so its thickness varies from 5 to 25 centimeters. "Rescuers do not recommend going out onto the ice even on foot," the rescuer said.
