      A resident of Tavda has been convicted for attempting to pass a banknote with a denomination of 5,000 dubles, reports the press service of the Sverdlovsk region courts.

      In Tavda, a magistrate issued a verdict against local resident Anton Cherenov, who repeatedly tried to buy goods in supermarkets using a souvenir banknote of "5000 dubles," which looks similar to a five-thousand-ruble banknote from the Bank of Russia.

      As established by the court, the defendant first attempted to pay with dubles for groceries in one of the stores, but the seller was vigilant and refused to accept the souvenir banknote.

      Cherenov decided to try again at other retail outlets. He successively visited the "Yelovsky," "Pyaterochka," "Magnit," and "Krasnoe&Beloye" stores, each time trying to purchase goods and receive change in real money.

      However, all attempts were unsuccessful as the sellers were extremely attentive. The prankster was reported to the police.

      As a result, a criminal case was initiated against the man under part 3 of article 30, part 1 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempted fraud - note from Uralweb.ru).

      The judge of the 3rd magistrate's court of the Tavda judicial district of the Sverdlovsk region found the defendant guilty and imposed a sentence of 250 hours of compulsory work. In addition, the convicted individual was ordered to pay court costs for the services of a defender in an amount exceeding 13,000 rubles.

      The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.

      "Note that joke banknotes are souvenir products intended for pranks and props; however, the frequency of their use in attempts at fraudulent payment for goods has noticeably increased recently," notes the press service of the region's courts.
