The court acquitted the woman from Sverdlovsk whose child died in an avalanche of snow that came down from the slope.
The Shalinsky District Court issued an acquittal regarding a local resident accused of causing the death by negligence of her 9-year-old son and his 8-year-old friend. The children died under a snow avalanche that descended upon them while they were tubing.
The tragedy occurred on February 15, 2026, on Mount Sokolinka in the village of Syilva. The two boys, who were riding on "tubes," were buried under the snow mass that came down. The children suffocated.
A criminal case was initiated against the mother of one of the deceased; she had bought the tubing shortly before the incident, taught her son how to ride it, and showed him the place from which it could be done. The second child had previously gone to the mountain with his mother, but on that day he went there with a friend who invited him to ride.
The woman was charged under part 3 of article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - "Causing death by negligence to two persons."
"However, during the court proceedings, the state prosecution did not present sufficient evidence of the defendant's guilt," reports the unified press service of the courts of the Sverdlovsk region.
The key role in the acquittal was played by the position of the parents of the second deceased child. They appealed to the court with a request to terminate the case, stating that they considered the defendant to be just as much a victim of the incident as they were.
"During the process, 24 witnesses were interrogated. All unanimously indicated the absence of guilt on the part of the accused, linking the children's deaths to extreme weather conditions. According to eyewitnesses, the cause of the snow slide was a dangerous natural factor: a record amount of precipitation over the winter combined with a sudden thaw that made the snow cover on the slope extremely unstable," reports the court's press service.
Having studied the case materials and the testimonies of the parties, the Shalinsky District Court concluded that the defendant's actions did not constitute a crime and issued an acquittal. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed in the appellate court.
