Mandarins from China affected by pests have been put on sale in the Sverdlovsk region.
Eight tons of mandarins from China, in which a pest was detected, were allowed for sale in the Sverdlovsk region. Specialists from the Rosselkhoznadzor deemed that the fruits do not pose a danger to local plants.
The quarantine object was identified during the inspection of a batch of citrus fruits as part of phytosanitary control on Tuesday, August 18, reports the Ural Interregional Office of Rosselkhoznadzor.
Together with specialists from the Yekaterinburg branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "VNIIZZh" (Federal Center for Animal Health - note from Uralweb.ru), employees of the interregional office of Rosselkhoznadzor inspected a batch of fresh mandarins weighing a total of 8 tons, which arrived in the Sverdlovsk region from China.
As a result of a visual inspection and subsequent laboratory examination, dead adults (mature insects - note from Uralweb.ru) of the red palm scale (a pest of citrus crops that causes plant wilting - note from Uralweb.ru) were found.
Rosselkhoznadzor made the decision to allow the further sale of the products in the Sverdlovsk region.
"This decision is based on the biology of the pest: the main way it spreads is through infected planting material (seedlings, cuttings). The fruits themselves do not pose a threat to the crops, as they do not serve as a medium for the reproduction and further spread of the live population of the pest," explained the supervisory agency.
