Two men extinguished the Eternal Flame at the Field of Mars in St. Petersburg. The incident occurred on the night of September 30. A criminal case has been opened.
As the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Volk wrote on her Telegram channel, information about the crime was received around noon on Tuesday, September 30, by the police of St. Petersburg’s Central District.
After studying CCTV footage, police established that around midnight two men poured liquid from a bottle onto the Eternal Flame.
“As a result of investigative-operational measures, criminal investigation officers identified the identities and whereabouts of the suspects. Two men from Yekaterinburg were detained by operatives in a rented apartment in the town of Kudrovo in the Vsevolozhsky District of the Leningrad Region,” Irina Volk reports.
The detainees have been taken to investigative authorities.
A criminal case has been opened under Article 243.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Destruction, damage or desecration of military burials, as well as monuments, stelae, obelisks, other memorial structures or objects commemorating those who died defending the Fatherland or its interests or dedicated to Russia’s days of military glory — note by Uralweb).
Desecration of a monument by a group of persons under this article is punishable by a fine ranging from 2 to 5 million rubles or in an amount equal to the convicted person’s wages or other income for a period of one to five years, or compulsory labor for up to 480 hours, or forced labor for up to five years, or imprisonment for the same term.
