The Sverdlovsk deputy governor took part in a cross procession in Yekaterinburg.
A large-scale cross procession took place in Yekaterinburg in honor of the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the St. Catherine Foundation reported on its Telegram channel.
On the Day of the Kazan Mother of God, which coincides with the state holiday National Unity Day, thousands of Orthodox faithful gather for prayer at the Holy Trinity Cathedral and, after the service, proceed in a cross procession through the Chapel of Saint Catherine to the Church on the Blood.
According to preliminary data, 4,500 people took part in the procession through the Ural capital today, the Yekaterinburg Diocese reported on its Telegram channel.
Among the participants in the prayer procession were the Deputy Governor of Sverdlovsk Oblast, Vasily Kozlov, and the director of the St. Catherine Foundation, Alexander Andreev.
The miracle-working icon was discovered in 1579 after a fire that destroyed almost all of Kazan and plunged the local population into despair. According to church tradition, the Mother of God appeared three times in a dream to a nine-year-old girl named Matrona and pointed out the spot on the ashes where the holy icon lay. Since its discovery, the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God has been renowned for numerous miracles.
In 1612, during the Time of Troubles, at the call of the Most Holy Patriarch, the people's militia led by Minin and Pozharsky marched on Moscow to liberate the city from the Poles. The army carried with it a miraculous copy of the Kazan icon.
Metropolitan of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye Yevgeny (Kulberg) reminded that "the Icon of the Mother of God is present in almost every family."
