In Yekaterinburg, a participant in the 1945 capture of Berlin died at the age of 102.
On Thursday, January 8, 2026, veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Honorary Citizen of Sverdlovsk Oblast and Honorary Citizen of the city of Yekaterinburg Erik Yakovlevich Kalugin died, the administration of the Oktyabrsky District of Yekaterinburg reported.
Erik Kalugin was drafted into the Red Army in 1942. He fought on the Volkhov, Leningrad and 1st and 2nd Baltic Fronts. As part of the 364th Rifle Tosnenskaya Division, in 1943 he took part in breaking the Siege of Leningrad, in the city's full liberation in 1944, and then in the liberation of Poland and the assault on Berlin.
After his demobilization in 1947, Erik Kalugin was educated at the Ural Polytechnic College and for many years worked at industrial enterprises in Sverdlovsk, holding responsible positions as chief mechanic and head of the design bureau. He was very versatile: he enjoyed photography, gardening and motorcycle trips, the Oktyabrsky District administration reported.
The veteran died in his 103rd year. The farewell ceremony for Erik Yakovlevich Kalugin will take place on January 14 at 14:00 at the Church of All Saints at: 6 Bluchera St. (Mikhailovskoye Cemetery — Uralweb note).
