A resident of Yekaterinburg left 412 people across Russia without an apartment.

In Yekaterinburg, a 34-year-old local resident will stand trial, accused of embezzling over 1.4 million rubles under the guise of renting out housing. The criminal group involved stole funds from a total of 412 citizens, reports the prosecutor's office of the Sverdlovsk region.

According to the investigation, a resident of Yekaterinburg created an organized criminal group with the aim of embezzling funds from citizens in need of housing, which included the accused.

They posted fake advertisements on the Internet for renting real estate at prices below the market average, as well as indicating additional options—availability of furniture, appliances, and fresh cosmetic repairs in the apartments.

When a potential tenant expressed interest in renting an apartment, the members of the organized criminal group promised to provide the contact details of the property owner only after signing a contract with the agency and paying a commission.

The group's organizer developed a system to deny the client the opportunity to move into the desired housing and to return the funds.

From June 2016 to March 2019, material damage totaling over 1.4 million rubles was inflicted on 412 victims, including 11 minors, across 85 subjects of the Russian Federation, the prosecutor's office reported.

The criminal case against the accused member of the organized criminal group, investigated under part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud by an organized group on a particularly large scale), will be heard by the Kirov District Court. A criminal case against other participants has previously been submitted to the court.

To subsequently compensate the victims for their losses, the court has imposed a seizure on the property of the accused, with a total value of over 4.4 million rubles.
