Earthquake waves from Kamchatka reached Sverdlovsk Region
Today at 12:12
The laboratory-observatory equipment "Arti" in Sverdlovsk Region registered elastic waves caused by a powerful earthquake in Kamchatka. URA.RU was told about this by Oleg Kusonsky, head of the observatory and candidate of geological-mineralogical sciences.
— Elastic waves propagate through the Earth's crust at about 4 km/s. Since the distance to Kamchatka is approximately 10,000 kilometers, the signal reached us 41 minutes after the tremors began, — Kusonsky explained.
The scientist noted that such waves can circle the Earth multiple times, but their energy is too low to be felt on the surface.
— They are not dangerous for Sverdlovsk Region. In this regard, our region is a real oasis, — he added.
Recall that today Kamchatka experienced the strongest earthquake in 73 years. Some sources report a magnitude of 8.7. Four tsunamis have been recorded in Sakhalin Region, a state of emergency has been declared, and residents are evacuating to higher ground.
At the beginning of the summer, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 occurred in the Taborynsky District of Sverdlovsk Region, on the border with Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
A resident of Yekaterinburg shared how they experienced the earthquake in Bangkok.
A landslide occurred in a Ural city.
People were evacuated from the Ural region due to the consequences of the earthquake.
