Former Central Military District commander Colonel General Alexander Lapin has been discharged from the army and is moving to civilian service, RBC reports citing a source.
The 61-year-old Lapin's last post was the reconstituted Leningrad Military District, which he commanded until August. He was succeeded as commander of the "North" troop grouping by Colonel General Evgeny Nikiforov.
The day before, the outlet Tatar-inform, without naming a source, reported that Lapin will become an aide to the head of Tatarstan, Rustem Minnikhanov, who was elected rais of the republic for a new term. Kazan is Alexander Lapin's hometown, RBC reports.
According to Tatar-inform, as assistant to the head of the region the former military district commander Lapin will be responsible for work supporting participants in the special military operation (SMO) and their families, as well as arranging contract service, social and medical rehabilitation, and the integration of returning fighters into civilian life.
At the very start of the SMO Alexander Lapin commanded the Central Military District and the "Center" troop grouping. In July 2022 he received the Hero of Russia star for his participation in the liberation of the Luhansk People's Republic.
After the withdrawal of Russian troops in autumn 2022 from Krasny Lyman, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, pinned responsibility for this on Lapin. Shortly after that the general went on leave, and in early 2023 he took up the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces.
During Lapin's command of the "North" grouping, the troops of the Leningrad Military District, among other things, participated in the liberation of the Kursk region.
